1,000 Books Before Kindergarten goes digital!

1000BBK Beanstack promo

December 2, 2020

If you’re a parent of a young child and have been missing the Marathon County Public Library's popular 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, we have great news: you and your child can now participate in the program virtually via the Beanstack app!

Never heard of Beanstack? It’s a web-based reading club platform that allows families to track the books that they read virtually. You can make a profile for each reader in your household, scan the barcode on books to add them to your virtual bookshelf, track the number of minutes each reader has read, chart your reading progress, join reading challenges, and so much more! The app is free to download in both the Apple App Store and in Google Play, and usually appears as "Beanstack Tracker." For specific instructions on how to get started with Beanstack, click here.

To join in, just download the Beanstack app, find your library (Marathon County Public Library) and create a profile for your family. From there, you are able to log books read aloud to your child. Once you’ve read 200 books aloud, your child will earn a free picture book! The same goes for each milestone of 400, 600, 800, and 1000 books read aloud. Call the MCPL children’s desk, or your local MCPL branch library, to request a book via curbside pick-up once you reach one of those milestones.

If your family began the in-person/pen-and-paper version of 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten prior to the pandemic, you can resume your progress on Beanstack and pick up where you left off. Or, if you prefer the “offline” version of tracking your progress, just call your preferred MCPL location to request your next tracking sheet via drive thru or curbside pickup.

But it’s not just small children who can participate in reading challenges on Beanstack. MCPL has also organized a Winter Reading Challenge for school-aged kids and teens, sponsored by Simon and Schuster! That challenge kicks off in January 2021. For a list of suggested reads, click here.

For questions about the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, the Beanstack app or the Winter Reading Challenge, call the MCPL Wausau children’s desk at 715-261-7220.
