With this year’s smash cinematic hit, Wonder Woman, the comic world’s best-known female superhero is back in the limelight. While her superhuman strength, intelligence and determination for justice are inspiring, there are some real life superheroes out there that are just as noteworthy.
Wonder Woman’s creator, William Moulton Marston, came of age at a time when suffragettes where marching for the right to vote. The two most influential women in his life, Elizabeth Holloway Marston, an attorney and psychologist; and Olive Byrne, the niece of birth control pioneer and activist Margaret Sanger, had a great impact on his work. It was these women and movement taking place around him that inspired Marston to create the hero we know as Wonder Woman.
By witnessing the economic, political, and societal disadvantages the women in his life experienced, Marston’s character of Wonder Woman was determined to figuratively (and often literally) break the chains that held women down. Originating from a paradise island inhabited only by the strong, independent Amazonian women, Wonder Women comes to America to defend the rights of women and to create a just and peaceful world for all.
Even though Wonder Woman is a fictional character, there are real women out there in the world that continue to strive for the same values. Check out these stories of women who defend the rights of women, and work to create a just and peaceful world for us all.
