One of the professional services the Marathon County Public Library (MCPL) offers is the proofreading and editing of job-related documents such as resumes, cover letters, and curricula vitae. Patrons may email these documents (preferably in Microsoft Word format) to, and one of our qualified Adult Reference staff members will proofread them in the areas of spelling, grammar, structure, and clarity. Resumes can aid a job-seeker in getting their foot in the door. Resumes, though, need to be top-notch to get noticed, especially now that some companies are using resume-reading technology to speed resume screening. Here are some helpful resume tips: When you're working on your resume, use keywords appropriate for the position you're applying for. Read through the position description and jot down words/phrases used in it. Mirror that language in your resume and cover letter. Use variation of keywords. Need some help with writing resumes? Well then, mark your calendars for Susan Guarneri's 3 Steps to a Stand-Out Resume  program to be given this next Monday May 24th. Susan will be presenting her Stand-Out Resume program at the Rothschild Branch at 3:00 on Monday. Later that day, she will give the same program at 6:30 at the Wausau Headquarters. So, you have two opportunities to receive some guidance from a noted career consultant and author. Funding for the programs was made available through a grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin. No pre-registration is required; the programs are free to all.

One of the websites available on the library's Career Connection computers is CW JOBS. Any job seekers looking for employment in Marathon County will want to check out this online resource. CW JOBS is a free service offered by the Wausau Region Chamber of Commerce. It is free to job seekers and members of the Chamber. CW JOBS aims at linking job seekers with employers. Job seekers can create their own personal profile, upload a resume and then search/apply for a position. Employers can likewise create a profile, post jobs and view uploaded resumes. The Headquarters Library's Career Connection features links to a dozen websites of interest to job seekers. This series will highlight each of those websites in the coming weeks. The Job Center of Wisconsin is the premier website for Wisconsin jobseekers. Created in 2008, it currently features details on over 14,000 job openings statewise; employer listings; information for laid-off workers including unemployment insurance; upcoming job fairs;  job seeker tips; and related  material. When it comes to finding a job, first impressions count! Submitting poorly-done cover letters or resumes won't help your job prospects. If you're unsure of how to write a cover letter or what to include on a resume, don't despair! The Marathon County Public Library's Career Connection Area can help. Several new titles have been added to the Headquarter Library's Career Connection Area. If you're unemployed or having trouble making ends meet, you might want to check out the following items. The "Very Quick Job Search" DVD provides essential job search techniques from career expert Michael Farr. The "Quick Resume and Cover Letter" DVD provides information and tips on writing a winning resume and cover letter. "Dealing With a Drop In Income" and "Help for Hard Times" are two locally-produced brochures with tips on dealing with being unemployed, coping if you're struggling financially and agencies that  can help in various ways. The final Job Seeking Skills Workshops will be offered the week of May 4th at the Wausau Library. On Tuesday May 5th the session will cover Writing Applications and Interview Skills. On Thursday May 7th the session will cover Writing Resumes and Cover Letters. Both sessions start at 6:30 in the 3rd Floor Wausau Room. No registration is necessary. All sessions are free. Wausau Library's Career Connection' Area Up-and-Running!

Marathon County  jobseekers now have another resource to use in their search for employment. The Wausau Library has opened its 'Career Connection'  area on the 2nd Floor. The area features three computers loaded with resume-writing programs and links to job sites in Wausau, Marathon County, the state of Wisconsin and the United States. New job-related books and audiovisual items such as CDs and DVDs are shelved in that area and available for check-out. Also available are dozens of free brochues on resume- and cover-letter writing, applications, interview skills, telephone tips, want ads, coping with unemployment and similar topics. With Wausau's jobless rate topping 12%, the Public Library can help local job seekers. The Library is offering Job Seeking Skills workshops this Monday April 27th and Thursday April 30th at the Wausau Library. The sessions offer up-to-date, valuable information on interviewing, job applications, resumes and cover letters. The instructor is from the NTC Learning Center. The sessions are free. A Reminder to Marathon County Jobseekers: Monday March 30th and Thursday April 2nd, the Marathon County Public Library and North Central Technical College are once again offering workshops useful to jobseekers.
