Now through June 26, MCPL patrons can log into their account on OverDrive (also known as Wisconsin's Digital Library) and borrow The Other Einstein on their smartphone, computer or tablet using the OverDrive app. The Big Library Read, held a handful of times each year, is a huge global e-book club where patrons can all read and discuss the same title together.
The Other Einstein is the story of Albert Einstein's wife Mitza Maric, a brilliant physicist in her own right. Mitza has always been a little different from other young women. Most 20 year-olds are wives, not studying physics at an elite Zurich university with only male students trying to outdo her clever calculations. But Mitza is smart enough to know that, for her, math is an easier path than marriage. Fellow student Albert Einstein takes an interest in her, however, and turns Mitza's world sideways in the process. Their courtship becomes a partnership of both the mind and the heart, but the two soon realize there might not be room for more than one genius in the marriage.
Though a work of historical fiction, this book touches on the hotly debated theory that Maric may have contributed to Einstein's theory of relativity through her own insight, work and research. In the same vein as Hidden Figures and Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald, this book brings to light yet another instance where history may have forgotten the work and discoveries made by strong, intelligent females in favor of the men they worked with.
OverDrive's Big Library Read runs from June 12 through June 26. If you happen to miss it, don't fret. The title will still be available on OverDrive after June 26, and a phyiscal copy of the book can always be checked out, too!
