Libraries were created for times like these!

never stop learning displayed on a laptop

June 24, 2020

Let’s face it: A library, on its own, cannot change the world. It’s a physical building — bricks, windows, shelves — filled with inanimate, physical materials like books, movies, and music. But… a library can be an agent of change for the people who visit — a source for learning about the world as it exists today and the history of where we’ve been as a planet, as a country, as a state, and as a people. Through the materials in our buildings, libraries are places that foster understanding and empathy.  People who work at libraries (myself included) pride themselves on the fact that we provide information on just about any topic, and always in a nonjudgmental way. It’s simple...

Along with summer comes road construction, so our youth services staff at MCPL Wausau has designed a fun, interactive space in our Early Literacy Center for young children to learn all about construction! Throughout the month of August, children can dress up like a construction worker using goggles, a hardhat and more at our dramatic play center; build with wooden blocks; and drive model diggers and cars around the carpeted town. You can read the story Tip Tip Dig Dig (one of my personal favorites) and then re-tell the story using flannel pieces. There are plenty of construction puzzles, magnets, sorting activities and, of course, a vast array of construction books to enjoy together. The construction theme...

After spending 1 or 2 days a week with each other for the past 20 years, the dedicated volunteers behind the Friends of the Marathon County Public Library acknowledge they’re more like family than friends. It’s a bond forged as pages flipped and the creative output of generations of writers — fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children’s and young adult picture books and literature — passed through their hands. Their curiosity led them to become shepherds on a mountain of words — likely billions of words, all within an arm’s reach — as they’ve methodically worked their hands around covers to keep their charge organized, sifting, weighing each book, and deciding whether someone might want to take an item home...

Affordable Care Act Enrollment Assistance at MCPL

Starting November 1 you can renew, update, compare plans.

November 2, 2017

Beginning November 1, open enrollment began for those wanting to purchase insurance coverage for 2018 via the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) health insurance marketplace. This open enrollment period runs through December 15, with insurance coverage beginning January 1. The ACA health insurance exchanges are intended for citizens who aren't eligible for health insurance benefits from their employer and who aren't enrolled in another kind of insurance program, such as Medicare or Medicaid. Despite the ongoing debate around repealing and/or revamping the ACA, it currently is still the law. While health insurance companies offering plans via the marketplace are no longer getting reimbursed for their...

Marathon County Uniform Addressing Update

uniform addressing map

October 24, 2017

In February 2016, the Marathon County Board adopted policy to implement a Uniform Addressing system. Instead of the current 10 rural address grids that contain duplicate or similar addresses, there will now be a Uniform Addressing grid, which will enable public agencies — especially emergency services — to provide the right service to the right place at the right time. Currently, 43 municipalities have joined together to partner in the county’s Uniform Addressing Project. Participating municipalities can be viewed at the current status map available at: http://mymarathoncountyaddress.org (if you reside in a town or if you live in the Village of...

View the Total Eclipse at MCPL!

August 7, 2017

If you’re like us, you’ve been eagerly anticipating the total solar eclipse that will happen on August 21, 2017. This out-of-this-world event is something that’s a long time coming, with the last total eclipse to be visible across the entire contiguous United States having happened in 1918 (and not since 1979 has a total eclipse been visible from the mainland United States). The next one will not occur until 2024, and who wants to wait that long to see one again? We here at MCPL have been talking about and planning our own Solar Eclipse Viewing Party for over a year and have tons of fun activities planned for patrons of all ages! Beginning at 11 a.m. on August 21 at our Wausau Headquarters, we’ll show...

Dr. Johnson (who has been briefing you and your group about the important scientific experiments she's been conducting), has left her office to speak with a colleague. After snooping through the doctor’s files, you discover that Dr. Johnson has something more nefarious up her sleeve—a full-on zombie virus that she’s planning to unleash on the unsuspecting public! Worse yet…it’s airborne, and anyone who comes in contact with this virus is guaranteed to...

Now through June 26, MCPL patrons can log into their account on OverDrive (also known as Wisconsin's Digital Library) and borrow The Other Einstein on their smartphone, computer or tablet using the OverDrive app. The Big Library Read, held a handful of times each year, is a huge global e-book club where patrons can all read and discuss the same title together. What to Read After "The Handmaid's Tale"

Handmaid's Tale screen capture

May 25, 2017

The Handmaid’s Tale, written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood in 1985, has been a popular dystopian novel that’s never gone out of print. Set in a near future East coast city, the U.S government has been overthrown by a religious totalitarian regime, and due to environmental and medical catastrophes much of the population is infertile. Besides the elite, women have lost all autonomy, and the fertile few are cast as Handmaids, their only purpose to reproduce for those in charge. Atwood’s writing comments on the social, political, and religious trends of America, speculating what reality would become if those trends were taken to the limit. The Handmaid’s Tale has been a feminist favorite that seems to...

Beginning today, May 8, all story times at MCPL Wausau will go on hiatus, including their Family Story Time, Preschool Story Time, Tales for Tots and Book Babies. All of these story times will resume on June 6.  Story time changes will also be coming to the MCPL branches this summer. Located on the second floor of the library's Wausau Headquarters, the community room was built to allow for easier patron access and to replace the library's third floor meeting room. Drive Thru to Reopen at MCPL Wausau

library drive trhu

March 24, 2017

The Marathon County Public Library is happy to announce that the drive thru at its Wausau Headquarters will reopen for public use at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 27! Located on the west side of the building, MCPL Wausau's drive thru has been closed since last October due to a construction project occurring in the library's basement area. That lower level is being renovated in order to move the Friends of the Marathon County Public Library down from their current home on the library's third floor. Though this project is still ongoing, it is far enough along for the drive thru to reopen to the public. Aside from picking up requested items, patrons may also pay their fines at the...

Library Working to Resolve Catalog Error

secure connection error

January 23, 2017

UPDATE 2/6/17: This issue has now been resolved. If you happen to experience any further problems accessing the library catalog, please feel free to contact us and let us know about the issue.   Original post: Beginning late last week, some library patrons began encountering sporadic errors when trying to access the library catalog, also known as V-Cat. So far, the error does not seem dependent upon the device, operating system or web browser patrons are using. The error is something we are aware of and is something the Wisconsin Valley Library Service (who maintains the catalog) is currently working to resolve. If you attempt to access the catalog and experience an...

Kids and Parents: Get Acquainted with MCPL

MCPL Wausau, exterior (front entrance)

January 9, 2017

New environments can be intimidating for any child, but for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorder, that fear can be amplified. New places – especially those in public – come with all sorts of unfamiliar sights, smells, and sounds, all of which can be overwhelming for kids on the spectrum. With our new monthly Sensory Story Time starting up in just a few days, we’ve put together a short photo slideshow to help better acquaint kids and parents with the library’s entrance and children’s area, which we hope will help them prepare for what to expect when visiting our Wausau Headquarters.

Are You Up for a Challenge?

May 3, 2016

The great thing about libraries is that they offer countless materials for a wide variety of people to experience, regardless of age, race, size, background, sexual orientation, religion or economic status. Since each person has their own opinions and expectations of what constitutes a "good book," patrons across the world sometimes challenge books in an effort to have them removed from the library's collection. Each year, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles reports from libraries, schools and the media on attempts to ban books in communities across the country. Below is the ALA's list of the top 10 most-challenged books of 2015. If you're interested in seeing what...

Libraries Transform

March 2, 2016

Have you experienced first-hand the transformative power of a library? It’s a big question, and one we hope many of you can answer with an emphatic “yes.” In April, library staff across the country – and the patrons we serve – will celebrate National Library Week. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Libraries Transform,” and our staff has been busy planning a wide range of programs and other activities, some related to that theme and others just for the fun of it. Sure, National Library Week is a chance for our library staff to pat ourselves on the back, and to accept more pats from our patrons (we love to hear how we’ve helped transform your lives for the better!) But it’s also a chance for us to...

Things I learned from the WLA Conference

November 27, 2015

On Nov. 4, 2015, I was fortunate to attend one day of the annual Wisconsin Library Association conference, held this year in Middleton. These conferences are a great chance to network, but more importantly, librarians and library staff from across the state come together to discuss different aspects of library operations – including sessions this year on programming, library design, collection development and engaging teens through technology, among other topics. Since MCPL covered the cost of attending the conference, I thought I would share with you, the public, some of the things I saw and learned during this beneficial excursion.   The morning keynote address was from Mita Williams, a librarian at...

Working to combat hunger and homelessness

NATIONAL HUNGER & HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS WEEK logo

November 24, 2015

Rep. Sean Duffy recently organized his third-annual Hunger and Homelessness Summit on Nov. 9 in Rothschild to bring together people from throughout central Wisconsin – government, business, individuals and non-profit folks – to discuss hunger and homelessness. More than 100 people participated, and I attended the summit to participate in discussions and learn about other community efforts that may help some of the patrons we serve at the library. As we gather with our families and friends in our homes to share holiday meals, I thought this would be a good time to share information not only from the summit, but also about available library resources. The need for overnight shelter and food assistance has...

They will solicit your ideas about services, facilities, and resources that you want to see at your library. Please take a moment if you can, and attend a session or write down your thoughts so that we may collect them and then implement those...

Providing Better Service to Customers With Hearing Loss!

May 2, 2013

The Marathon County Public Library recently installed 'Hearing Loop' devices at the Main, Children's and Reference desks at the Headquarters Library in Wausau.  Hearing Loops are a type of Hearing Assistive Technology that work in conjunction with hearing aids or cochlear implants. They pick up the staff person's voice via a microphone and transmit it wirelessly to the hearing aid or implant worn by the customer. The customer thus receives a direct, clear signal that is not garbled by distance or background noise. These devices will enable staff to better assist customers with hearing loss while maintaining customer privacy.

MCPL’s current, future efforts

March 9, 2013

A recent survey from the Pew Research Center found adults still love to hold a library book, but also want libraries to keep up with technology and provide a comfortable environment – all priorities for Marathon County Public Library staff as well. The Pew study, released in January, found the overwhelming highest use of libraries – 73 percent – is borrowing print books. With more than 250,000 print books in our system, we gladly facilitate that unique feeling of cracking open a good book. Yet we also know – and the Pew survey backs it up – that our patrons expect greater access than ever before to electronic books and audio books. In 2012, we tripled the number of e-books available to about 54,000...

Come and visit Verne at the Wausau HQ library lobby. But don't let his Hawaiian shirt fool you. For underneath that hat he's an All-American Pilgrim Pig who can't let go of his island origins.  Here's the story. Around 300 AD Verne set out from points west with the first Polynesian explorers. With skill, luck and pig-navigation they landed safely in Hawai'i. Lacking metal knives (for carving pigs), pottery (in which to boil them) and a written language (for writing cute little stories such as, "The Three Little Makahiki Pigs") Verne was lonely but safe in ancient Hawai'i. Modern Hawai'i came in 1778 with the unexpected, unwanted arrival of British Captain James Cook.  Warfare was forbidden...

Check out our  Amazon.com Wish List.  If you have been wanting to make a donation to Marathon County Public Library, but  thought "I wonder what they  need"  - now you know!  The books we have selected are titles that we would like to add to our collection.  The list will be updated at least once a month with new titles. When you purchase the title - it will be shipped directly to us!  If you would like the book to be a memorial purchase, you can specify this in the "notes" section of the order.  And no worries about buying something someone else purchased... each time an item is bought, it is automatically taken off our list!
