April 22, 2016
Marathon County Public Library is extending its observance of National Library Week (April 10-16) throughout the month of April by highlighting its employees through a series of staff profiles! Now through April 30, learn a little bit about the personnel at our nine MCPL locations, and feel free to give them a friendly "hello" next time you see them!
Name: Johanna N.
Job title: Library Specialist
MCPL Location: Wausau Headquarters
Time Worked at MCPL: 2 ½ years
What are some of your main job responsibilities?
Working in the children’s department, which entails keeping displays current, answering questions posed by parents and kiddos, weeding, helping out with special projects/events, and ensuring everyone has a great experience while visiting MCPL.
What nicknames, if any, do you go by?
Jo, Jojo Bean, Beaners and Jo Birdie.
Describe yourself in three words.
Cats, birds, hiking.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
I am currently reading text books, as I am in grad school. I also am rereading A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. It’s one of my favorite books.
What book transformed you, your way of thinking or of viewing the world? How did it change you? The book that transformed me was The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. It brought up the issue of reality versus memory and how as time passes, we start to forget things, our memory fills in the gaps and creates an entirely different version of what might have happened. Also, Lao Tzu and Taoism. What a wonderful philosopher who, even in this day and age, can help us put a perspective on life/stress/conflict.
What’s your favorite part of your job?
Whenever I am able to help a kiddo hunt down a book or help them discover new books, it is priceless. The look on their face makes my job worth doing!
What is your ideal vacation? Where would you go and what would you do there?
I would go back to Ireland. I studied abroad in London and was able to visit several additional countries. When I visited Ireland I enjoyed Cork (I even kissed the Blarney Stone!) but was not able to visit Dublin or the Cliffs of Moher. Iceland is another country topping my list of places to visit.
What’s the best advice anyone has given you?
Stay true to yourself and never take for granted those that love you and stand by you.
What food item(s) you absolutely cannot resist?
Saltine crackers, peanuts, provolone cheese and any parmesan cheese produced by Sartori. Cheese is my weakness!
How do you think MCPL will continue to transform in the future?
I think that we will continue to embrace the digital era through updating our computers, technology, and expertise. We are here to serve our patrons, so I also feel we will listen to patron feedback in terms of what they expect from us and act accordingly.
