Staff Review: "The Better Liar"
If you are a fan of suspenseful thrillers, this debut novel by Tanen Jones is a must read!
This novel races through twists and turns, alternating between chapters told by three unreliable narrators: Leslie, Robin, and Mary. Leslie has spent the last few years taking care of her father as he dies from cancer. After he dies, Leslie finds out that she and her sister have each inherited half of his estate, which she desperately needs. However, there is one catch: Leslie will only receive the money if her sister Robin returns to New Mexico to spend time with Leslie and claim her half of the estate.
Leslie has not seen Robin since she ran away from home as a troubled teenager, but she manages to track her down at her apartment in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, Leslie is too late and Robin is dead. As Leslie is leaving Las Vegas, she stops at a diner and meets Mary, a charismatic aspiring actress who resembles her sister. Leslie convinces Mary to impersonate Robin for half of the money, but clearly, things do not go as planned. As the title implies, everyone is a liar and everyone has a hidden agenda. What happened to Robin? Why does Leslie so desperately need the money? Is Mary dangerous? This book kept me guessing until the very end!
