The Music of the Deep

Cover: 'The Music of the Deep'

Staff Review: "The Music of the Deep" by Elizabeth Hall

Alex Turner escapes from an abusive relationship by fleeing to a small town and taking on a job with a local marine biologist, who researches the orcas that pass through the area. While the locals are attached to the local group of orcas that swim through, the town is also known for being one of the most haunted towns in Washington. The more Alex stays, the more she wonders if she believes in the paranormal, or if she's just still on edge from the past she fled from.

Smelling the scent of fresh roses when there are none, hearing strange noises, and doors opening by themselves put her even more on edge. Part mystery, part drama, part ghost story, this story was not what I was expecting but kept me gripped from the first chapter to the last. I found myself quickly growing attached to the characters, and really appreciated the cautionary tale about orcas in the wild, and their tragically diminishing numbers.
