Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here

Cover: 'Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here'

Staff Review: "Scarlett Epstein Hates It Here" by Anna Breslaw

Fifteen-year-old Scarlett Epstein is crushed when her favorite television show, Lycanthrope High, is cancelled. A popular author of fanfic related to the series, she mourns the loss of a creative outlet as much as the series itself. Her online fanfic friends encourage her to get a life “IRL” (in real life) and to expand the scope of her creative writing. Her real life social circle is composed of her best friend Avery and her seventy-something-year-old neighbor Ruth. Her longtime crush, Gideon, is captivated by her nemesis (and Avery’s sister) Ashley. She and her online friends decide to create their own characters for the Lycanthrope High world that takes place after the conclusion of the series and excludes the series’ characters. Scarlett finds inspiration in her real-life friends and acquaintances as she writes her new series and shares her work with her online community. What could possibly go wrong? I thoroughly enjoyed the witty, snarky Scarlett and her attempts to deal with real-world challenges as she finds her voice and footing in a fictional world. I especially enjoyed her fanfiction, including the occasional drafts-in-progress, and the feedback from her online friends. Recommended for fans of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl and readers who are willing to embrace the humor and angst of teen life.

Audience: teens | Genre: fiction
