What is proof of U.S. citizenship to apply for a passport?

FAQ: What is proof of U.S. citizenship to apply for a passport?

Answer:

You must provide an official, certified birth certificate issued by the county or municipality in which you were born.

Photocopies, hospital birth certificates and certified abstracts of birth are not accepted.

Alternatively, naturalized U.S. citizens may submit a certificate of naturalization.

You also must submit any previous U.S. Passport with your application.

For adult applications, a previous passport may be used in lieu of other proof of citizenship.

Documents showing your proof of citizenship will be sent with your application to the U.S. Department of state.

Documents will be returned to you by mail around the same time your passport arrives, although they may arrive separately.
